#ThisVerseFitz relating to modern time, modern concerns, reactions to personal hardships.
On this fifth Sunday of 2025, February 2, we return to the Old Testament and enter the book of Job (pronounced Jobe)! This book has the most chapters (42) of the ones we’ve reviewed up to now, however the chapters are shorter. This book is a story of humbling tests and perhaps an exaggeration.
We previously attempted to address the life long questions, “Why do good things happen to bad people?” and “Why do bad things happen to good people?” This book doesn’t exactly answer the questions but it revolves around those sentiments.
Job 1 – 2 introduces Job as a good person from the land of Uz (makes you wonder if the Wizard of Oz was influenced by this book) filled with good fortune.
Right off the bat, it is worrisome and unsettling to hear that God is holding meetings with Satan. This certainly “Fitz” in with recent times as we witnessed very recently, Satan’s team invited to and praised at the so-called “transition of power” from evil to good.
Job 1:6 – “Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them.”
Satan’s first test of Job, attacking his family and property begins in 1:13 and when that is not enough to destroy Job’s spirit, God grants Satan permission to attack Job’s health beginning in 2:1. These actions in the story are quite discouraging. It hits home for some, including myself in Job 2:7 – “So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD and struck Job with loathsome sores from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head.
This “Fitz” with personal hardships
In 2:11 we are introduced to three very important friends of Job. Job 2:11 – “Now when Job’s three friends heard of all this evil that had come upon him, they came each from his own place, Eliphaz the Teminite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite. They made an appointment together to come to show him sympathy and comfort him.”
In chapter 3, Job begins his worst feelings of darkness and despair. All of the weight of losing everything including his health, wears him down. He wishes he was “dead and gone” into darkness with no thoughts of an afterlife. This “Fitz” as many people visit these extremely dark places when suffering through personal hardships (even if not even close to the hardships of Job). In current time, these people are driven to suicide.
In chapter 4, Eliphaz is the first of the three friends to unsuccessfully attempt to comfort Job in seeing some light through the darkness. Then in chapter 8, Bildad attempts the same. Again in chapter 11, Zophar tries as well. Their conversations continue throughout the Story into 32 where Elihu enters and rebukes the three friends.
There are endless quotes to admire from each of the three conversations. 11:7-9 from Zophar comes to mind as an example. Job 11:7-9 – “Can you find out the deep things of God? Can you find out the limit of the Almighty? It is higher than heaven – what can you do? Deeper than Sheol – what can you know? Its measure is LONGER (A) than the earth and broader than the sea.”
If we step back to Chapter 9 for a moment, there are similar verses, starting with Job 9:6-9 “who shakes the earth out of its place, and its PILLARS TREMBLE (B); who commands the sun, and it does not rise; who seals up the stars; who alone stretched out the heavens and trampled the waves of the sea; who made the Bear and Orion, the Pleiades and the chambers of the south.
Elihu enters:
Job 32:2-5 – “Then Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the family of Ram, burned with anger. He burned with anger at Job because he justified himself rather than God. He burned with anger also at Job’s three friends because they had no answer, although they had declared Job to be in the wrong. Now Elihu had waited to speak to Job because they were older than he. And when Elihu saw that there was no answer in the mouth of these three men, he burned with anger.”
God enters:
In 38, God has his moment to judge Job for all that he said against him in the previous chapters. Job 38:1-16 – “Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind and said: “Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? Dress for action like a man; I will question you, and you will make it known to me. Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements? – Surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone, when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy? Or who SHUT IN THE SEA (C) with doors when it burst out from the womb, when I made clouds its garment and thick darkness its swaddling band, and prescribed limits for it and set bars and doors, and said, ‘Thus far shall you come and no farther, and here shall your proud waves be stayed’? Have you commanded the morning since your days began, and caused the dawn to know its place, that it might take hold of the skirts of the earth, and the wicked be shaken out of it? It is changed like clay under the seal, and its features stand out like a garment. From the wicked their light is withheld, and their uplifted arm is broken. Have you entered into the springs of the sea, or walked in the recesses of the deep?
God shares many examples of all he has done throughout the chapter and into 41. In 42 we learn what became of Job after all of his trials.
Job 42:10 – “And the LORD restored the fortunes of Job, when he had prayed for his friends. And the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before.

“God Search in Words” works exactly as a normal “Word Search” with a somewhat higher level of difficulty given the Biblical terms. Once all the words are found, the leftover letters repeat a phrase 11.9 times (meaning the phrase is present 11 times and 9 letters of the phrase are left over).
