On this forty second Sunday of 2025, October 19, we enter the Book of James.
Testing of Your Faith. Find joy in trials.
James 1:1-3 – “James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the twelve tribes in the Dispersion: Greetings. Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.”
Ask the Lord for Wisdom.
James 1:5 – “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given to him.”
Riches come and go.
James 1:9-11 – “Let the lowly brother boast in his exaltation, and the rich in his humiliation, because like a flower of the grass he will pass away. For the sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beauty perishes. So also will the rich man fade away in the midst of his pursuits.”
Perfect gifts come from the Father.
James 1:17 – “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.”
Hearing and Doing the Word. Quick to Listen, Slow to Speak and Anger. Avoid Self-Deception.
James 1:19-22 – “Know this, my beloved Brothers: Let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”
What Religion was intended to be. Caring for those in need.
James 1:27 – “Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.”
What is Faith without deeds?
James 2:17 – “So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.”
Actions in addition to Faith.
James 2:24 – “You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.”
The world’s friendship’s can make God an enemy.
James 4:4 – “You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.”
Resist Satan.
James 4:7- “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
Life is uncertain and our time is a mist.
James 4:14 – ” Yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life?For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.”
Confess your sins and pray for healing.
James 5:16 – “Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.”
We have the power to save sinners.
James 5:19-20 – “My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back, let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.”
