ThisVerseFitz relating to modern times, Imprisonment for standing up for beliefs.

On this twenty-fifth Sunday of 2025, June 22 – we enter the book of Colossians. Like Philippians, Colossians is also written by Paul and Timothy. A continuation of our time with Paul. The letter is to the people of Colossae. Although Paul did not start the church of Colossae, he penned the letter based on a visit from his friend and coworker, Epaphras, who started the church in Colossae. The visit took place in one of Paul’s imprisonments. This “fitz” in modern times since we recently spent time with a close friend who was wrongfully imprisoned for standing up for his country. He used his time in prison to teach the word of God also.

Some of the book reminds the people to obey their slave owners which seems extremely out of touch. In modern day, it could refer to employer / employee relationship. Unfortunately on this imperfect earth, many people are slaves to their jobs and their jobs create all the opportunities they have in this realm. Therefore they obey the modern day slave owner in order to continue receiving the opportunities. They also state that the slave owners must treat the slaves respectfully. In modern times it is also important to have an employer that treats you respectfully. They also speak about one time breaking free from all enslavement.

The book acknowledges that people should mind their own business and that there will always be others that do not follow the word. Do not lash out at those people. Set a good example as someone who does follow the word.

There are many popular verses with deep meaning.

Colossians 1:15-17 – “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities – all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”

Colossians 2:6-7 – “Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.”

Paul speaks about some of the rules that promote self made religion. It “fitz” in modern times, reminiscent of rules like, “Don’t eat meat on Friday”, or “Don’t curse or you’ll go to hell!” There are so many worse things going on these days that deserve a one way ticket to Hell. But we won’t get into those.

Colossians 2:20-23 – “If with Christ you died to the elemental spirits of the world, why, as if you were still alive in the world, do you submit to regulations – “Do not handle, Do not taste, Do not touch.” – According to human precepts and teachings? These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in promoting self made religion and asceticism and severity to the body, but they are of no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh.”

Colossians 3:1-4 – “If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.”

Colossians 3:12-17 – “Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgive each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

Colossians 4:6 – “Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.”

“God Search in Words” works exactly as a normal “Word Search” with a somewhat higher level of difficulty given the Biblical terms. Once all the words are found, the leftover letters repeat a phrase 6.6 times (meaning the phrase is present 6 times and 6 letters of the phrase are left over). We call this the “AfterPuzzle”.
